Storm Readiness

Plumbing Checks After A Storm

An EF2 tornado struck Iona on January 16, 2022, and Hurricane Ian struck the region in September 2022. Flood risk differs from one address to the next, so check the FEMA flood map for your property rather than relying on the name of a neighborhood.

General plumbing note: after a storm, check for leaks at the main shutoff and at fixtures, look for wet drywall or a rising water bill, and confirm the water heater is working. Irrigation connections can also have backflow assemblies that utilities want tested on a schedule. Ask your water provider what applies to you.

Plumbing work is governed by the Florida Building Code, Plumbing, which is based on the International Plumbing Code (IPC), and many jobs can require a permit. Iona is unincorporated, so permits there usually go through Lee County rather than the City of Fort Myers.

FAQs

Iona Plumbing Questions

Is Iona part of Fort Myers?

Not officially. Iona is an unincorporated community in Lee County and a census-designated place, about eleven miles southwest of downtown Fort Myers.

Do you serve Iona?

Yes. Call with your street address and we will confirm coverage before scheduling anything.

What should I check for after a storm?

Look for leaks at the main shutoff and under sinks, wet drywall, a water heater that will not heat, and a water bill that rises with no explanation.

Does my irrigation system need backflow testing?

Many water utilities require periodic testing of backflow assemblies. Ask your water provider what applies to your connection, and call us if a test or a repair is needed.

How do I find out whether my home is in a flood zone?

Look up your address on the FEMA flood map. Flood risk varies by address, so a neighborhood name alone does not tell you.

Local details on this page come from 2020 U.S. Census figures for the Iona census-designated place as summarized on Wikipedia.
