About Cypress Lake

A Large Community South Of Fort Myers

Cypress Lake is an unincorporated community in central Lee County and a census-designated place. It lies about seven miles south of Fort Myers, the county seat. McGregor borders it to the west, Whiskey Creek to the north, and Villas to the east.

It had 13,727 residents at the 2020 census and 9,306 housing units, which makes it one of the larger communities in this part of Lee County. Because it is unincorporated, it is not part of the City of Fort Myers.

Empty Homes And Hidden Leaks

Plumbing Care For Homes That Sit Empty

At the 2020 census, 22.8 percent of the housing units in Cypress Lake were vacant. Census vacancy covers more than seasonal homes, but plenty of Southwest Florida properties are lived in only part of the year. A leak in an empty house can run for weeks before anyone sees it.

General plumbing note: before leaving a home for an extended stay, shut off the main valve, turn the water heater to its vacation setting or off, and ask someone to check the house. On return, run each fixture and look under sinks for drips. Our articles on protecting plumbing while you are away and on a sudden water bill spike explain the steps.

Plumbing work is governed by the Florida Building Code, Plumbing, which is based on the International Plumbing Code (IPC), and many jobs can require a permit from the building department with jurisdiction over your address. Cypress Lake is unincorporated, so permits there usually go through Lee County rather than the City of Fort Myers.
